"We are Athletes and Competitors"
Intent
At Burrington C of E Primary School we value the importance of Physical Education in our curriculum and believe it is essential in supporting the physical health and mental well-being of our children.
We understand that delivering high-quality teaching and learning opportunities will inspire all children to achieve success in physical education and in developing life skills.
Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all our children not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the School Games values of honesty, respect, passion, determination, teamwork and self-belief which we uphold.
We teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values.
Implementation
- We provide challenging and enjoyable learning opportunities through a range of sporting activities including: invasion games, net and wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor and adventure.
- We use REAL PE as our scheme of work.
- Year 6 attend a residential camp annually where the children take part in a range of outdoor and adventure activities including: climbing, abseiling, archery, rifle shooting, zip line, street surfing, surfing, orienteering and initiative exercises.
- Our Medium Term plans outline the PE units that are taught in each group and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are met.
- We value the Government Active 60 minutes and ensure that our children take part in the 30 active minutes during the school day.
- We encourage children to take part in extra-curricular activities provided by the school and external agencies.
- To support the teachers with high quality PE lessons, we employ Future Stars to work alongside the children and teachers. This also provides CPD for the teachers in a variety of sporting activities and gymnastics.
- We provide pathways for children to explore a range of activities outside of school and have made links with local clubs and societies.
- We take part in Level 1 competitions within our school community as well as encouraging all children to compete at NSSPEA festivals and competitions. All children will represent the school at some point during their time at Burrington.
- As a school, we are a member of the NSSEPA – this provides the school links to events, curriculum support, CPD and support from local schools.
- Maple Class children are part of the Sports Organising Team in the role of sports leaders– where they help to organise resources and kit, captain, select teams and encourage younger sport participation
- Visits – we encourage visits from sporting organisations e.g. Somerset Cricket
- In PE lessons we provide the children with personal challenges in order for them to be the best that they can be.
By taking part in a variety of competitions – children experience different venues and facilities.
- We value our whole school Sports Day – the children participate in house multi-skill activities followed by tradition competitive races. These are cross phase house teams with the older children leading their team through a range of activities.
- Workshops and taster sessions – e.g. rugby
- Opportunities to officiate / lead
- We are well-resourced and our PE shed contains equipment for our PE lessons. We have superb grounds for outdoor activities and utilise the village hall for dance, gymnastics and other PE.
